Wish you luck, I've been enjoying the story and caught the link over here.

I lost almost 90 lbs using the shangri-la diet, which works well with south beach, but isn't for everyone.

Good luck!
I'll be cheering you on and using you as inspiration to lose about half as much myself.
I'm going for a general leafy greens and whole grains increase, using a lot of recipes from http://www.101cookbooks.com/
I think half the trick will be starting to cut down portion sizes ~gradually~ and incorporating some cardio throughout the day.
Anyways, it'll be grand to read along on your journey and get inspired with every post.
(by the way, I love Hell on $5 a day! it's fantastically fun)

@Brainweevil: I'll repeat... the best diet plan is the one you stick to. This is the one I think I can stick to. We shall see.

Also, adjusted portions require nothing special in the family meal preparations, you just don't pile whatever they're eating on your plate 12 inches high.

I don't know, dude. About the South Beach idea, I mean. You already know what you need to do, without resorting to (possibly unhealthy) gimmicks. Eating more slowly allows you to judge more accurately when you've had enough food and allows you to savor your foods.

You can still eat delicious foods and lose weight, you know - by eating less. A can of chili, some tortillas, cheese, and sour cream to match is enough food for a whole day. Not an average lunch, like I used to believe. Just looking around at the size of your portions can be a real eye opener. Changing them can change your life, via your navel line.

Exercise. I haven't actually added this to my regime and lost fifty pounds that I've kept off, despite my unrepentantly sedentary nature, for nearly two years now.

I do wish you luck, though, however you approach it.
