Photo of a scale from wikimedia commonsFirst thing I’m going to say: those aren’t my feet. I just deleted a paragraph about my feet which took us waaaay off-topic. Let’s just say the photo is for illustrative purposes only and move on.

The baby followed up the stomach flu with a sinus cold. So I’ve been living with the misery of a stuffy head. But it’s getting better and I couldn’t keep putting off the diet. I did my shopping yesterday, had a last hurrah with carbs by grazing and having a beer at a Superbowl party (and a bit of candy after dinner) today. I may sweeten my evening relaxation tea with sugar tonight, but when I head up to the bedroom tonight, I say goodbye to carbs for three weeks.

After that three weeks, I’ll start incorporating carbs back in, using South Beach as a guiding principal, though I’ll be concentrating on portion control, eating slower, and having a general idea of calorie consumption as I do that.

I’m also going to have to exercise, but don’t expect me to go running a half marathon. Tomorrow it’s about a mile of walking, broken into a .4 mile and a .6 mile walk. The last thing I want to do is go overboard on the first day, hurt myself, and then feel the need to comfort-eat trying to weaken my resolve. I’ve done that.

I didn’t get fat and out of shape in a day. I’m not going to get skinny and in shape in a week. I may one-day run a half-marathon. The idea is to get healthy enough to run and bike around with my kids without getting seriously winded. Anyway, if I was ever going to shoot for a major fitness goal, it would not be a half-marathon. My goal would be to clear the first two stages of “Ninja Warrior”.

Back to dieting… I did a bit of my pre-diet cooking tonight by making a pot of homemade chili. We had bowls of it with a tablespoon of sour cream and some low fat cheese, toast, and crackers. I was gratified to hear my older boy (who will be four this month) make yummy noises as he dropped in oyster crackers and then scooped them out.

If you don’t know me from my other blog, I’m not so much a “foodie” as just someone who likes to cook. My wife can cook, but I enjoy it, so I’ve fallen into the role of family chef. So with Daddy going on a diet, either he cooks two different dinners (my “diet” dinner, and a non-diet one for the wife and boy), or he figures out a way to cook his diet dinner and then bulk it up for the wife and boy.

Later in the week, we’ll have that chili again, but I’ll be on a low-carb plan, so I’ll be scooping it up with lettuce leaves or bell-pepper slices.

I’d already decided that tomorrow’s breakfast would be a couple of Evergood hot link sausages (with mustard), which I figured would net me 4 carbs. I decided to check the calories on that just now, so I could blog them, and I got a rude awakening.

I looked at the serving size, and it said there were 24 servings in the package. Those Costco packs are big, but there weren’t 24 sausages in it. There were twelve. So that serving size with the two grams of carbs… half a sausage. So the other sausages I turned my nose up at because they had 4 grams of carbs per sausage were just giving me the whole sausage as a serving size.

Those nutrition info labels are tricky. I’m going to do a post on them soon.

Well, that big breakfast of sausage won’t be so big. Guess, since I’m letting myself luxuriate in a little extra fat in the first few days, I might tone down the heat with a little sour cream.

I’ll let you know when I blog my weigh-in during breakfast. Wish me luck!
