No, I’m not a toddler touting a dubious ability. I’m touting how much my waist line has shrunk in around 6 days. I don’t have actual measurements. I’m not doing that thing where they measure various parts of my body and come up with a number of inches I lost. But when your pants are getting loose on you, it’s a nice thing.

With my previous eating habits, I was happy to see sugars below 160 two hours after a meal (ADA target is to be below 180) and below 110 when I woke up in the morning. Since going on this low carb diet, my highest reading after a meal has been 112, and that’s with me not taking any insulin before the meal. The first time, I just forgot to take the shot because I was so intent on the whole “first meal of the diet” and having to blog it. And since I’m usually in a metabolic doldrums around breakfast, my pre-breakfast shot is usually my biggest pre-meal shot (except when I’m eating large quantities of crap for dinner). So this morning’s weigh-in went well. I lost 7 pounds in the first three days. Considering my starting weight and how you lose water weight at the outset of low carb, that’s not too crazy, despite being over 2 pounds a day. It will slow down from here. I’m figuring we’ll see a 2-3 pound drop between now and Monday for a total of 9-10 in the first week. Wish me luck!
It’s hard to be good. Those numbers are one of the primary methods of validating my effort and telling me it’s all worth it. And the bigger they are the first week, the bigger I expect them to be the second week.
Today was a bit of a test. Tuesday night is “kids eat free” night at a local restaurant, and I’ve made it a weekly father-son event with my oldest boy for the past few months. The restaurant gives you a bucket of peanuts when you sit down (in the shell – throw the shells on the floor), brings out rolls with honeyed butter before your entree, and offers side dishes like a baked sweet potato with butter and cinnamon sugar, mac and cheese, or a basket of fried onion strings with a dipping sauce. |
One of the things I’ve been doing religiously since starting the diet is checking my blood glucose. I was diagnosed with diabetes just before I turned 36. I managed my sugars with oral meds for a few years, but at 39, I had to add insulin shots to my blood sugar management regimen. It’s a combo of a daily time-released shot with smaller doses of a faster-acting insulin before meals.
So the three-day weigh in is tomorrow morning. I’m a bit apprehensive. I want it to be a huge number, but I’m afraid a huge number would get my hopes up that this will be a breeze. I can recall at least one time I lost a bunch of weight in the first week, then almost nothing in the second week, and gave up in disgust over the second week’s numbers.
On the second day, the Lord created the heavens and the earth… and Greg stuck to his diet. Which event is more miraculous, I’ll leave to your judgement.
